These infections can be caused by bacteria, viruses, fungi or other pathogenic microorganisms and can have serious consequences if not treated properly. At the Fight Infections Foundation we have a research unit on infections that affect the musculoskeletal system. To learn more about what this work unit does, we interviewed <strong>Dr. Esteban Reynaga<\/strong>, doctor at the <a href=\"https:\/\/hospitalgermanstrias.cat\/\">Germans Trias Hospital<\/a> and researcher at the <a href=\"https:\/\/lluita.org\/en\/infeccions\/serious-bacterial-infections\/?swcfpc=1\">Foundation<\/a>.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span class=\"HwtZe\" lang=\"es\"><span class=\"jCAhz JxVs2d ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\"><span class=\"HwtZe\" lang=\"en\">Why has the Locomotor System Septic Functional Unit been created?<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<div class=\"lRu31\" dir=\"ltr\"><span class=\"HwtZe\" lang=\"es\"><span class=\"jCAhz JxVs2d ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\"><span class=\"HwtZe\" lang=\"en\">The <strong>Functional Septic Unit<\/strong> was created to offer concrete answers to people with osteoarticular infections and address them comprehensively. These types of infections are very complex and to treat them properly, the collaboration of several specialists is necessary. Therefore, to guarantee optimal results, the unit has been made up from the beginning by traumatologists, infectologists, plastic surgeons, home hospitalization personnel and microbiologists, who are the fundamental pillars of the group<\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<p><strong><span class=\"HwtZe\" lang=\"es\"><span class=\"jCAhz JxVs2d ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\"><span class=\"HwtZe\" lang=\"en\">What patients do you treat in the \u201cLocomotor System Functional Septic Unit\u201d?<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"HwtZe\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"jCAhz JxVs2d ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">The patients we treat in our Unit have suffered a bone fracture, whether traumatic or not, and need the placement of a prosthesis, which may or may not be articular, or an osteosynthesis material, such as plates or nails.<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"jCAhz JxVs2d ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">Instead of evolving correctly, these cases end up developing an infection that can even appear after several years, since there are microorganisms that have the ability to hide and cause an infection at some point in life<\/span><\/span><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span class=\"HwtZe\" lang=\"es\"><span class=\"jCAhz JxVs2d ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\"><span class=\"HwtZe\" lang=\"en\">What percentage of people are affected by musculoskeletal infections?<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"HwtZe\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"jCAhz JxVs2d ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">Between 1% and 3% of people who undergo surgery to have a prosthesis implanted develop an infection.<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"jCAhz JxVs2d ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">Therefore, we could say that it is a rare infection.<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"jCAhz JxVs2d ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">However, considering that many prostheses are placed each year, such as about 1,000 at the Germans Trias Hospital, we are talking about between 10 and 30 patients developing an acute or chronic infection<\/span><\/span><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span class=\"HwtZe\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"jCAhz JxVs2d ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">What are the most common infections you treat?<\/span><\/span><\/span><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"HwtZe\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"jCAhz JxVs2d ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">We normally treat acute and chronic infections.<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"jCAhz JxVs2d ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">The difference between the two is that the acute ones usually appear during the first month after surgery and, generally, the patient is hospitalized to continue the treatment.<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"jCAhz JxVs2d ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">However, chronic infections usually manifest later and the patient visits us because they experience pain, loosening of the prosthesis, fever or fluid accumulation in the joint.<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"jCAhz JxVs2d ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">The procedure to treat these infections varies: in the case of acute ones, the prostheses are generally respected and the moving parts are changed;<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"jCAhz JxVs2d ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">while in the case of chronic cases, the complete prosthesis is usually replaced<\/span><\/span><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span class=\"HwtZe\" lang=\"es\"><span class=\"jCAhz JxVs2d ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\"><span class=\"HwtZe\" lang=\"en\">What do you focus your research on?<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"HwtZe\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"jCAhz JxVs2d ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">At this moment we are taking the first steps in research.<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"jCAhz JxVs2d ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">We have two important objectives: on the one hand, collaboration with other institutions, such as the GEIO group (Osteoarticular Infections Study Group), with which we participate in three studies based on the administration of certain antibiotic treatments.<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"jCAhz JxVs2d ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">At the same time, at the Fight Infections Foundation we lead our own research in animal models to answer many questions that currently have no answer.<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"jCAhz JxVs2d ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">We are also focused on investigating acute prosthesis infections to develop new therapeutic strategies<\/span><\/span><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span class=\"HwtZe\" lang=\"es\"><span class=\"jCAhz JxVs2d ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\"><span class=\"HwtZe\" lang=\"en\">Do you have any class=\"ryNqvb\"><span class=\"HwtZe\" lang=\"en\">At Germans Trias Hospital we have the privilege of having a Functional Locomotor System Septic Unit that few hospitals can offer. This work unit has a multidisciplinary team of professionals who collaborate in synergy in a very positive way.
