This virus affects both humans and animals, especially birds, which are the main hosts of the virus. In fact, the infection is mainly transmitted through the bite of mosquitoes that have previously bitten birds carrying the virus<\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span class=\"HwtZe\" lang=\"es\"><span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\"><span class=\"HwtZe\" lang=\"en\">How is the West Nile virus transmitted?<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span class=\"HwtZe\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\"><strong>Mosquito bites<\/strong>: This is the most common way the virus is transmitted.<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">Mosquitoes that have bitten infected birds can transmit the virus to people and other animals when they bite them.<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span class=\"HwtZe\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\"><strong>Blood transfusion and transplants<\/strong>: In very rare cases, the virus can be transmitted through blood transfusions, organ or tissue transplants from an infected donor.<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span class=\"HwtZe\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\"><strong>From mother to child<\/strong>: There are also rare cases where an infected mother can transmit the virus to her child during pregnancy, childbirth or through breastfeeding.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><span class=\"HwtZe\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">Who can be affected?<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"HwtZe\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">In a small percentage of cases (less than 1%), the virus can cause serious neurological diseases such as encephalitis (inflammation of the brain) or meningitis, especially in older people or those with a weakened immune system<\/span><\/span><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span class=\"HwtZe\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">Symptoms<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"HwtZe\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">It should be noted that many people infected with West Nile virus do not develop symptoms, but among those who do, class=\"HwtZe\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">Muscle or joint pain <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span class=\"HwtZe\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">Eye pain <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span class=\"HwtZe\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">Swollen lymph nodes <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span class=\"HwtZe\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">Skin rashes (especially on the chest, abdomen or back) <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span class=\"HwtZe\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">These symptoms usually last a few days but fatigue may persist for weeks.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<ol start=\"2\">\n<li><strong><span class=\"HwtZe\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">Severe symptoms (neuroinvasive):<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span class=\"HwtZe\" lang=\"es\"><span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\"><span class=\"HwtZe\" lang=\"en\">They affect less than 1% of infected people, but can be very serious and affect the central nervous system. <span class=\"jCAhz\">Symptoms may class=\"HwtZe\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">Disorientation or confusion <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span class=\"HwtZe\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">Seizures Loss of consciousness or coma <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span class=\"HwtZe\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">Stiff neck <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span class=\"HwtZe\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">Muscle tremors or spasms<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span class=\"HwtZe\" lang=\"es\"><span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\"><span class=\"HwtZe\" lang=\"en\">Older people and those with weakened immune systems are more susceptible to developing severe forms of the disease.
