{"id":24009,"date":"2024-10-21T10:27:17","date_gmt":"2024-10-21T10:27:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lluita.org\/rajesh-gandhi-fins-que-no-arribem-a-la-cura-del-vih-els-tractaments-de-llarga-durada-poden-facilitar-el-control-de-la-infeccio\/"},"modified":"2024-10-21T13:18:59","modified_gmt":"2024-10-21T13:18:59","slug":"rajesh-gandhi-fins-que-no-arribem-a-la-cura-del-vih-els-tractaments-de-llarga-durada-poden-facilitar-el-control-de-la-infeccio","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lluita.org\/en\/rajesh-gandhi-fins-que-no-arribem-a-la-cura-del-vih-els-tractaments-de-llarga-durada-poden-facilitar-el-control-de-la-infeccio\/","title":{"rendered":"Rajesh Gandhi: \u00abUntil we reach a cure for HIV, long-term treatments can make it easier to control the infection\u00bb"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><span class=\"HwtZe\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\"><a href=\"https:\/\/scienhub.org\/en\/education-en\/\">ScienHub Education<\/a>, the platform of the <a href=\"https:\/\/lluita.org\/en\/?swcfpc=1\">Fight Infections Foundation<\/a> in charge of organizing training activities, has celebrated the seventh edition of HIV Clinical Topics, focused on the update on new antiretroviral treatments and drugs in development.<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"jCAhz\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">In this scientific meeting, Dr.<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">Rajesh Gandhi, Professor of Medicine at Harvard University and Director of HIV Clinical Services at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.massgeneral.org\/es\/internacional\">Hospital General de Massachussets<\/a>, was actively involved as a speaker.<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">From the Fundaci\u00f3 Lluita contra les Infections we had the opportunity to speak with him to learn more about the current situation of HIV on a global scale.<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">We invite you to read this interview with Dr.<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">Gandhi, one of the world&#8217;s leading experts on HIV infection.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span class=\"HwtZe\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">In terms of new HIV treatment options, where are we headed?<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"HwtZe\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">I think we are currently moving towards long-acting treatments, some of which can be taken weekly orally, while others could be taken every six months, albeit by injection.<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">In addition, we are placing a strong emphasis on the development of therapies that help reduce associated comorbidities.<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">Finally, I think it would be critical to increase the resources devoted to HIV cure research, in the hope that in the future we can not only manage this infection, but also eradicate it<\/span><\/span><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span class=\"HwtZe\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">You have recently been appointed as the new vice chair of the AIDS Clinical Trials Group (ACTG).<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">What would you like to implement from this new position?<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"HwtZe\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">Looking ahead, I would like to expand our research into long-acting antiretroviral treatment (ART) regimens, explore new approaches to address HIV-related aging, and promote innovative strategies to treat tuberculosis and hepatitis<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">B. Undoubtedly, it is also a priority to promote additional studies to finally achieve a cure for HIV<\/span><\/span><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span class=\"HwtZe\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">Why is there still a mortality gap in people with HIV having such excellent antiretroviral treatments?<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"HwtZe\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">This is due, in part, to poverty and unequal access to health care, especially in the most disadvantaged countries, but also in the United States, where health coverage is not equitable for all.<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">In addition, the residual inflammation in people with HIV favors the appearance of cardiovascular diseases and other complications, which unfortunately reduce life expectancy<\/span><\/span><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span class=\"HwtZe\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">Did you have the opportunity to explore a little Catalonia?<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"HwtZe\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">I particularly enjoyed visiting Montserrat, an experience that will undoubtedly be unforgettable<\/span><\/span><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em><span class=\"HwtZe\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">In the picture Dr.<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"jCAhz\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">Gandhi leaves accompanied by <strong>Dr.<\/strong><\/span><\/span> <span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\"><strong>Josep M.
