{"id":24095,"date":"2024-11-18T12:20:47","date_gmt":"2024-11-18T12:20:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lluita.org\/mejoras-cognitivas-para-las-personas-con-covid-persistente\/"},"modified":"2024-11-18T15:20:18","modified_gmt":"2024-11-18T15:20:18","slug":"mejoras-cognitivas-para-las-personas-con-covid-persistente","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lluita.org\/en\/mejoras-cognitivas-para-las-personas-con-covid-persistente\/","title":{"rendered":"Phase 1 of SuperCAP study concludes: a program to help people with long-term COVID who have fatigue and cognitive difficulties"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><!--StartFragment --><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"HwtZe\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\"><strong>Long COVID syndrome <\/strong>is a multisystem disease that can appear after contracting SARS-CoV-2 infection.<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">Studies show that approximately 10% of people infected with SARS-CoV-2 develop it.<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">According to data from the <a href=\"https:\/\/salutweb.gencat.cat\/ca\/inici\/index.html#googtrans(ca|en)\">Department of Health<\/a>, <strong>15,559 cases<\/strong> of long COVID have been diagnosed in Catalonia, of which <strong>13,672 are still active<\/strong>.<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">This disease, often very disabling, predominantly affects <strong>women<\/strong>, with an average age between <strong>40-50 years<\/strong>, who have had an acute infection that has not required hospital admission.<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">One of the most frequent, disabling and difficult-to-manage symptoms are fatigue and cognitive disorders.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"HwtZe\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">New technologies can help improve the care of people with various chronic diseases.<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">For this reason, the <a href=\"https:\/\/ics.gencat.cat\/ca\/inici\/index.html#googtrans(ca|en)\">Catalan Institute of Health<\/a> has launched the <a href=\"https:\/\/hospitalgermanstrias.cat\/web\/guest\/e-salut-eng\">eSalut platform<\/a> where users, through a mobile application, can receive information, advice, guidelines and personalized exercises to improve or help manage their symptoms.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><!--StartFragment --><\/p>\n<div class=\"lRu31\" dir=\"ltr\">\n<p><span class=\"HwtZe\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/lluita.org\/en\/?swcfpc=1\">Fight Infections Foundation<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.germanstrias.org\/en\/\">Germans Trias i Pujol University Hospital<\/a>, in collaboration with <a href=\"https:\/\/en.ara.cat\/\">Diari ARA<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/lacaixafoundation.org\/en\/\">Obra Social &#8220;La Caixa&#8221; Foundation and the Catalan Health Institute<\/a>, have developed a specific programme within the eSalut platform to improve the daily functioning and quality of life of people who live with cognitive and fatigue symptoms associated with Persistent COVID, the SuperCAP programme, which is a digital application that improves the cognitive difficulties of people with persistent COVID.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-24078 size-large aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/lluita.org\/custom\/uploads\/2024\/11\/02_super_cap-1024x607.png\" alt=\"Aplicatiu digital SuperCAP\" width=\"1024\" height=\"607\" srcset=\"https:\/\/lluita.org\/custom\/uploads\/2024\/11\/02_super_cap-1024x607.png 1024w, https:\/\/lluita.org\/custom\/uploads\/2024\/11\/02_super_cap-300x178.png 300w, https:\/\/lluita.org\/custom\/uploads\/2024\/11\/02_super_cap-768x455.png 768w, https:\/\/lluita.org\/custom\/uploads\/2024\/11\/02_super_cap-1536x911.png 1536w, https:\/\/lluita.org\/custom\/uploads\/2024\/11\/02_super_cap.png 1800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Long COVID<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span class=\"HwtZe\" lang=\"es\"><span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\"><span class=\"HwtZe\" lang=\"en\">Symptoms of long COVID can vary widely and include extreme fatigue, breathing difficulties, headaches, cardiovascular problems, muscle and joint pain, among others. Mental health problems may also appear, such as memory loss, mental confusion (known as \u201cbrain fog\u201d), anxiety, depression, or sleep disturbances.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"HwtZe\" lang=\"es\"><span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\"><span class=\"HwtZe\" lang=\"en\">This condition can affect anyone who has had COVID-19, regardless of the severity of initial symptoms. Research continues to evolve to better understand this syndrome and find effective treatment options, as it is unknown exactly why some people develop long COVID while others do not. Medical care and emotional support are essential for those affected<\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong><span class=\"HwtZe\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">SuperCAP Project<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span class=\"HwtZe\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">This project aims to design and evaluate the effectiveness of the SuperCAP program, proposed with the intention of improving the cognitive, emotional and functional status of people with persistent COVID.<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">The project is developed in two phases.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"lRu31\" dir=\"ltr\"><span class=\"HwtZe\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">The <strong>first phase<\/strong> includes the development of a pilot study, in which the initial version of the program is evaluated by both people with persistent COVID and health professionals.<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">This stage allows for gathering feedback and adjusting the program according to the needs identified.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<p><span class=\"HwtZe\" lang=\"es\"><span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\"><span class=\"HwtZe\" lang=\"en\">In many cases, an intervention may not be well received by all patients due to various factors such as complexity in administration or simply because it does not align with users&#8217; expectations and preferences. Testing the intervention on a small, representative sample allows researchers to obtain valuable feedback that will allow them to adjust and optimize the approach before its mass implementation<\/span>. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"HwtZe\" lang=\"es\"><span class=\"HwtZe\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">The<strong> second phase<\/strong> consists of an efficacy study designed as a clinical trial to evaluate a non-pharmacological intervention.<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">In this trial, people with persistent COVID and cognitive difficulties will be followed for 6 months and randomly assigned to different intervention groups.<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">A control group will also be followed to compare the results and evaluate the effectiveness of the program.<\/span><\/span><\/span><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"lRu31\" dir=\"ltr\"><span class=\"HwtZe\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">As<strong> Jos\u00e9 A.
