{"id":24739,"date":"2025-04-23T10:14:50","date_gmt":"2025-04-23T08:14:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lluita.org\/?p=24739"},"modified":"2025-04-23T11:08:13","modified_gmt":"2025-04-23T09:08:13","slug":"el-dr-roger-paredes-coordinador-medic-del-pla-destudis-del-nou-grau-en-medicina-de-la-upc","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lluita.org\/en\/el-dr-roger-paredes-coordinador-medic-del-pla-destudis-del-nou-grau-en-medicina-de-la-upc\/","title":{"rendered":"Dr. Roger Paredes, the scientific director of the Foundation, joins as the medical coordinator of the curriculum for the new degree in Medicine at UPC"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The\u00a0Universitat Polit\u00e8cnica de Catalunya \u2013 BarcelonaTech (UPC)\u00a0has appointed the doctor and scientist\u00a0Roger Paredes\u00a0as the\u00a0medical coordinator of the curriculum for the new degree in Medicine, which will be offered from the 2026-2027 academic year, initially at the facilities of the\u00a0Faculty of Optics and Optometry of Terrassa (FOOT).<\/p>\n<p>Paredes, who has an <strong>extensive professional career in the scientific and healthcare fields, is currently the<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>scientific director of the <a href=\"https:\/\/lluita.org\/en\/?swcfpc=1\">Fight Infections Foundation<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0and head of the\u00a0<strong>Infectious Diseases Service at the Hospital Germans Trias i Pujol<\/strong>. In this regard, he will join the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.upc.edu\/ca\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">UPC<\/a> as a\u00a0<strong>distinguished professor and medical coordinator of the curriculum for the new degree<\/strong>, in which a multidisciplinary team works.<\/p>\n<p>The degree in Medicine, which was announced in April 2024, has the approval of the UPC Governing Council, and work is being carried out jointly with the Terrassa City Council and the Terrassa Health Consortium, owner of the Terrassa University Hospital, which will be the reference center for the new studies. The rector of the UPC, Daniel Crespo, explained that<strong> \u201cwith the incorporation of a figure of the prestige of Dr. Paredes as the medical coordinator of the curriculum, the project takes a definitive boost and reaffirms our commitment to offering high-quality medical studies, with innovative teaching methodologies and technological DNA, to be reference in the state university system.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3>Nationally and internationally recognised scientist<\/h3>\n<p>Roger Paredes, a recognised expert in infectious diseases, obtained his master&#8217;s and doctorate degrees in Medicine and Surgery from the Universitat Aut\u00f2noma de Barcelona (UAB) and specialised in HIV research at the Brigham &amp; Women&#8217;s Hospital of Harvard Medical School, with the support of a \u201cla Caixa\u201d scholarship for postgraduate studies. <strong>His team at\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.irsicaixa.es\/ca\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">IrsiCaixa<\/a>\u00a0has demonstrated the clinical utility of\u00a0deep sequencing of HIV-1\u00a0in high- and low-income countries<\/strong>. Currently, he is conducting pioneering research on the role of the\u00a0gut microbiome in the pathogenesis of <a href=\"https:\/\/lluita.org\/en\/infeccions\/vih\/?swcfpc=1\">HIV<\/a> infection and chronic inflammation.<\/p>\n<p>The scientist coordinates the European project MISTRAL, funded with 10 million euros under the European Union&#8217;s Horizon 2020 programme, and is the principal co-investigator in 3 projects of the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, aimed at discovering the role of the human microbiome in the pathogenesis of HIV, transmission, and associated cancers.<\/p>\n<p>Since the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/lluita.org\/en\/infeccions\/covid-19\/?swcfpc=1\"><strong>COVID-19<\/strong>\u00a0<\/a>pandemic,\u00a0Paredes\u00a0has been <strong>the Spanish national coordinator of\u00a0emblematic randomised clinical trials\u00a0funded by the\u00a0National Institutes of Health (NIH)\u00a0and the\u00a0National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID)<\/strong>, including\u00a0ACTT-1 and 2, and the\u00a0ACTIV-3\/TICO and STRIVE platforms, which have defined the current standard of care for this disease in hospitalised and outpatient patients. The department he coordinates hosts the\u00a0largest long COVID treatment unit in Spain.<\/p>\n<p>Paredes\u00a0is a<strong> member of the<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>Steering Committee of the WHO HIV Drug Resistance Strategy (ResNet)<\/strong>, the WHO HIV Treatment Guidelines Group, and the WHO Clinical Network on COVID-19. He is also a co-author of the Spanish HIV (GESIDA) and COVID-19 (SEIMC) treatment guidelines and a member of the IAS-USA HIV Drug Resistance Group.
