The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0043135426000473?via%3Dihub\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">study,<\/a> recently published in the scientific journal <em>Water Research<\/em>, provides new evidence highlighting the need to adapt prevention and surveillance strategies in the face of global warming.<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>The study is the result of a joint effort between the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.germanstrias.org\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Germans Trias i Pujol Research Institute (IGTP)<\/strong>,<\/a> the <strong>AQUALAB<\/strong> laboratory, the <strong>Public Health Agency of Catalonia<\/strong>, the <strong>Meteorological Service of Catalonia<\/strong>, and the <strong>Fight Against Infections Foundation<\/strong>, with the participation of <strong>Dr Pedro Botet<\/strong>, head of the severe bacterial infections line and co-head of the infections in immunocompromised patients line at the Foundation.<\/p>\n<style>\na {\n    text-decoration: none;\n    color: #464feb;\n}\ntr th, tr td {\n    border: 1px solid #e6e6e6;\n}\ntr th {\n    background-color: #f5f5f5;\n}\n<\/style>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<h3>An environmental bacterium with a growing impact on health<\/h3>\n<p><em>Legionella<\/em> is a bacterium that occurs naturally in aquatic environments but can proliferate in artificial installations such as pipework, cold-water systems, cooling towers and ornamental fountains. When dispersed in aerosol form and inhaled, it can cause respiratory infections which, in some cases, develop into a severe pneumonia known as Legionnaires\u2019 disease.<\/p>\n<p>This bacterium thrives particularly well in warm water, between 25 and 42\u202f\u00b0C, a range that is increasingly reached due to rising temperatures associated with climate change. This scenario creates more favourable conditions for its multiplication and increases the risk to public health.<\/p>\n<style>\na {\n    text-decoration: none;\n    color: #464feb;\n}\ntr th, tr td {\n    border: 1px solid #e6e6e6;\n}\ntr th {\n    background-color: #f5f5f5;\n}\n<\/style>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<h3>A pioneering study based on real surveillance data<\/h3>\n<p>Although previous studies had already explored the relationship between climate and cases of Legionnaires\u2019 disease, until now there had been little information on how meteorological conditions affect artificial water systems, which are the only known source of infection.<\/p>\n<p>This research, led by the <strong>Clinical and Environmental Infectious Diseases Study Group (CEID)<\/strong> at IGTP, is the first of its kind to be based on samples collected through routine monitoring of water systems, rather than solely on installations investigated following specific outbreaks.<\/p>\n<p>The analysis includes more than <strong>32,000 water samples<\/strong> collected between 2018 and 2023 (excluding 2020 due to the impact of the pandemic), all reported cases of Legionnaires\u2019 disease in Catalonia, and meteorological data from the same period.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<h3>More heat, more risk<\/h3>\n<p>The results show that rising ambient temperatures and the lengthening of warm periods create ideal conditions for <em>Legionella<\/em> to increase its presence in water systems. When outdoor temperatures rise, installations such as cold-water systems or cooling towers can warm up sufficiently to allow the bacterium to multiply.<\/p>\n<p>According to Elisenda Arqu\u00e9, first author of the study, \u201cprolonged heat episodes not only raise ambient temperatures, but also alter the internal conditions of water systems, making them more vulnerable to bacterial colonisation\u201d. In the months following these episodes, cases of Legionnaires\u2019 disease tend to increase.<\/p>\n<p>One of the most relevant findings is that <strong>cold-water systems<\/strong>, often considered less problematic, can become critical points in contexts of intense heat. In addition, the study detects a progressive increase in positive samples over the years analysed, in parallel with the rise in reported cases.<\/p>\n<style>\na {\n    text-decoration: none;\n    color: #464feb;\n}\ntr th, tr td {\n    border: 1px solid #e6e6e6;\n}\ntr th {\n    background-color: #f5f5f5;\n}\n<\/style>\n<div>\n<h3>Challenges in diagnosis and prevention<\/h3>\n<p>The analysis also highlights diagnostic challenges. Within the species <em>L. pneumophila<\/em>, the most prevalent, serogroups 1 and 2\u201314 are equally present in the environment. However, the most commonly used diagnostic methods primarily detect serogroup 1, suggesting that a proportion of infections may go unrecorded.<\/p>\n<p>In this context, the researchers emphasise that the current challenge is not only to detect <em>Legionella<\/em>, but also to <strong>anticipate high-risk periods and installations<\/strong> in a context of climate change\u2014an essential aspect for protecting people who are particularly vulnerable to severe respiratory infections.<\/p>\n<style>\na {\n    text-decoration: none;\n    color: #464feb;\n}\ntr th, tr td {\n    border: 1px solid #e6e6e6;\n}\ntr th {\n    background-color: #f5f5f5;\n}\n<\/style>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<h3>Adapting strategies in the face of climate change<\/h3>\n<p>The study\u2019s findings show that global warming is favouring the colonisation of water systems by <em>Legionella<\/em> and, as a result, the increase in Legionnaires\u2019 disease.
