Emerging viral respiratory infections

COVID-19 is an infectious disease caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus that has affected millions of people worldwide. In September 2021, the World Health Organization (WHO) confirmed more than 4.5 million deaths worldwide.

THE CHALLENGE

The emergence of COVID-19 has marked a turning point in research on infectious diseases.

Further research is needed to find treatments that work for the acute disease, prevent is progression and reduce mortality. Likewise, it is estimated that 10% of people who have recovered from this infection are left with persistent COVID: the causes of this syndrome need to be found and patients must be offered the best therapeutic solutions.
