RESEARCH THAT TRANSFORMS LIVES

At the Fight Infections Foundation, behind every study there are people: faces, voices, and stories that give meaning to our research.

This year, we wanted to put a face to it and focus on long covid, listening to the testimonies of professionals and patients who live this reality firsthand.

They are the ones who remind us why research is essential and why our fight continues.

CLINICAL RESEARCH, OUR DRIVING FORCE TO PROTECT THE FUTURE

Infections continue to be a growing threat to global health. At the Fight Infections Foundation, we drive clinical research to understand them, prevent them, and improve their treatment.

We work from a comprehensive approach, with six research lines ranging from HIV and emerging respiratory infections—such as long covid—to STIs, international health and neglected diseases, immunocompromised patients, and severe bacterial infections.

Our goal is to transform scientific knowledge into solutions that improve people’s lives.

SCIENTIFIC PROJECTS

This year, we have promoted projects of high scientific impact that strengthen our leadership in clinical research. Highlights include the AELIX‑003 study in HIV, which has demonstrated the potential of a therapeutic vaccine to improve viral control without antiretroviral treatment; the COCOS trial in long covid, which explores new therapeutic options for neurocognitive symptoms; and BREAKFREE‑SY, an international project to advance the diagnosis and control of congenital syphilis, funded by an ERC Consolidator.

In addition, we have consolidated relevant advances in global health, such as the first European protocol for screening and treatment of female genital schistosomiasis, which already shows clear improvements in patients’ health.

At the same time, we have launched projects that may transform clinical practice, such as the COVID KIDNEY study, which investigates whether kidney transplants can be safely performed in patients with asymptomatic or mild covid‑19. We have also expanded research into multidrug‑resistant bacteria in aquatic environments and severe infections, strengthening the One Health approach and microbiological surveillance.

This set of studies reflects a year of solid, multidisciplinary progress focused on generating real solutions for people.

Another perspective: when HIV affects you up close

This year, the Communication Department launched a series of video podcast conversations in which different testimonies engaged in dialogue with researchers from the Foundation about infectious diseases.

In fact, on the occasion of World AIDS Day, we featured filmmaker Carla Simón, who has experienced this reality up close as the daughter of parents affected by HIV and who addresses this topic in several of her works.

Success of the Giving Tuesday campaign

On December 2, the Fight Infections Foundation joined Giving Tuesday with a clear objective: to raise funds to launch a pioneering strategy to protect immunocompromised patients before it is too late.

The microdonation campaign achieved a total of €10,572 raised, 106% more than our original goal.
