The World Health Organization (WHO) has published the document Integrated drug resistance action framework for HIV, hepatitis B and C and sexually transmitted infections, 2026–2030, which will set the international strategic direction until 2030 to curb the spread of drug resistance against HIV, hepatitis B and C, and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs).
This new action framework promotes an integrated approach that includes prevention, early diagnosis and proper management of resistance, with the aim of ensuring treatment effectiveness and reducing the global impact of this public health issue.
Dr Roger Paredes, Scientific Director of the Fight Against Infections Foundation and Head of the Infectious Diseases Service at Hospital Germans Trias i Pujol, has actively contributed to the development of this document. His involvement reinforces the Foundation’s commitment to fighting infections and conducting research to guarantee safe and effective treatments for everyone.
The WHO document proposes a coordinated, people-centred response that integrates specific and cross-cutting actions in five key areas: prevention and response, surveillance, research and innovation, laboratory capacity and governance. This new strategy aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals and WHO’s global health strategies.
The guidance emphasises the importance of ensuring access to high-quality, equitable and stigma-free services, promoting the responsible use of antimicrobials to preserve the effectiveness of current treatments. It also focuses on strategic coordination among governments, communities, researchers and global partnerships to strengthen health systems.
The main objective of the document is clear: to prevent the emergence and spread of drug resistance to ensure that the eradication of HIV, hepatitis B, hepatitis C and other STIs as public health threats remains achievable by 2030.
The participation of experts such as Dr Roger Paredes highlights the Foundation’s role in developing global strategies to address emerging health challenges and contribute to international public health.
