The Fight Infections Foundation (FLI) has been accredited as a Center of Excellence in Infectious Diseases by Gilead Sciences. In this context, on February 19 and 20, 2025, the Foundation will host the first training course aimed at bringing together healthcare professionals to address the latest advances in the treatment and management of SARS-CoV-2 infections and other infectious diseases in immunocompromised individuals.
The event, organized by ScienHub Education, a platform of the Foundation that organizes training activities and projects, features the participation of leading experts such as Dr. Roger Paredes, Head of the Infectious Diseases Department at the Germans Trias Hospital and Scientific Director of the Fight Against Infections Foundation, and Dr. Lourdes Mateu, physician at the Germans Trias Hospital and Head of the COVID-19 Section at the Fight Infections Foundation, who will lead sessions on acute SARS-CoV-2 infection and Long COVID. The event will cover topics such as treatment pathways, clinical cases, and ongoing clinical trials.
The second day of training is dedicated to infections in kidney transplant patients and will be led by Dr. Alba Romero, physician at the Germans Trias Hospital and researcher at the Foundation. This session will review screening and vaccination protocols, as well as therapeutic strategies for managing specific infections such as cytomegalovirus (CMV) and BK virus (BKV). Additionally, clinical cases will be presented to deepen practical knowledge in patient care.
These training sessions reflect the commitment of the Center of Excellence in Infectious Diseases to continuous education and innovation in the treatment of complex infections. Through theoretical and practical sessions, healthcare professionals will have the opportunity to update their knowledge and share experiences to improve patient care.
Dr. Roger Paredes, Scientific Coordinator of this training event, comments: “Being accredited as a Center of Excellence in Infectious Diseases is a recognition of the work we do in research, innovation, and clinical care. This first training event allows us to establish a meeting space for healthcare professionals, where they can share knowledge and experience in managing infections in immunocompromised individuals. SARS-CoV-2 and Long COVID continue to pose challenges, as do infections in transplant patients, and it is crucial to keep working on providing effective responses based on the latest scientific evidence. This course is another step forward in our commitment to improving patient care and driving progress in the field of infectious diseases.”
With these initiatives, the Fight Infections Foundation continues to work towards ensuring better care for people affected by infectious diseases and contributing to advancements in research in this field.
