The fight against multidrug-resistant infections takes centre stage at a scientific conference

This February marked the fourth edition of the conference “The Challenge of Multidrug-Resistant (MDR) and Extensively Drug-Resistant (XDR) Infections”, a face-to-face scientific meeting held at the Palau Macaya, organised by ScienHub Education, the platform that drives the Foundation’s training events, and coordinated by Dr Lluïsa Pedro-Botet, Head of Severe Bacterial Infections at the Foundation, and Dr Josep Maria Miró, consultant physician specialising in infectious diseases at Hospital Clínic de Barcelona.
The conference brought together leading professionals in infectious diseases, internal medicine, intensive care units, microbiology, specialist nursing, hospital pharmacy and research, with the aim of addressing one of today’s major public health challenges: the growing number of infections caused by microorganisms resistant to antimicrobials.
MDR infections, which are resistant to multiple classes of antibiotics, and XDR infections, which show near-total resistance to available treatments, are associated with higher morbidity, mortality and healthcare costs, particularly in hospital settings and among immunocompromised patients. In response to this scenario, the conference highlighted the need for a comprehensive approach combining appropriate antimicrobial stewardship, infection control measures, early diagnosis and the development of new treatments.
The scientific programme addressed key issues such as the impact of climate change on antimicrobial resistance, the role of the microbiota in infectious diseases and immune response, as well as innovative strategies to optimise the treatment of severe infections and advances in new antimicrobials.
This fourth edition builds on a well-established track record of conferences focused on continuing professional development and clinical updating in the field of complex infections, fostering knowledge exchange among specialists and reinforcing the commitment to a coordinated response to antimicrobial resistance.
The initiative forms part of the Foundation to Fight Infectious Diseases and ScienHub’s commitment to promoting high-level scientific debate spaces that contribute to improving clinical practice and public health.
