WHAT IS SCHISTOSOMIASIS?

Schistosomiasis is an infectious disease caused by a parasite freshwater lakes and rivers in Sub-Saharan Africa. Infection occurs only through contact with this contaminated water.

Many infected people do not show symptoms for years, but others may experience:

· Persistent abdominal pain
· Pain or burning sensation when urinating
· Blood in the urine
· Recurrent urinary tract infections

If left untreated, the disease can lead to serious complications, such as infertility, bladder cancer, or kidney problems. The parasite can remain active in the body for more than 30 years if no treatment is received.

Is it curable?

Yes. Schistosomiasis is easily cured with a very simple oral treatment, based on tablets that safely eliminate the parasite.
