Infections in immunocompromised patients

Immunocompromised individuals are people whose immune system is impaired and therefore have a reduced ability to defend themselves against infections. This condition may result from an underlying disease, immunosuppressive treatment, cancer, organ transplantation, or, more rarely, a genetic disorder. Infections remain one of the leading causes of complications and mortality in these patients. For this reason, it is essential to develop new prevention, diagnostic, and treatment strategies to improve their prognosis and quality of life.

THE CHALLENGE

Advances in medicine have made it possible for an increasing number of people to survive complex oncological, hematological, and chronic diseases. As a result, the population of immunocompromised patients continues to grow steadily.

Many of the infections affecting these patients are caused by opportunistic microorganisms that do not usually cause disease in individuals with a healthy immune system. Detecting and treating these infections appropriately remains a major clinical challenge.

In this context, our research focuses on four main objectives:

- Developing effective strategies to prevent infections.
- Improving early diagnosis through novel microbiological and immunological tools.
- Adapting infection management to new treatments and emerging patient profiles.
- Developing innovative therapies that help reduce mortality and associated complications.

Invasive fungal infections

We develop novel tools for the early diagnosis of diseases such as mucormycosis and aspergillosis. We also explore innovative therapeutic approaches, including immunotherapies, to reduce mortality in patients with severe immunosuppression.

Innovative therapies and haematopoietic transplantation

We analyse infections associated with new oncohaematological therapies and viral reactivation. Our goal is to establish monitoring and prophylaxis protocols that optimise preventive measures and treatment strategies.

Recurrent infections and catheter-related bloodstream infections in cancer patients

We study recurrent infections and catheter-associated bloodstream infections to identify risk factors and validate preventive strategies. This helps reduce complications and avoid treatment interruptions.

Infection management in kidney transplantation

We work to optimise the management of infections in transplant recipients, including new therapeutic protocols and the monitoring of opportunistic viruses. The aim is to improve patient safety and reduce complications such as hospital admissions or graft loss.

Immune monitoring and precision medicine

We investigate how immune responses influence infection risk in immunocompromised individuals. Through innovative immune monitoring tools, we aim to personalise preventive measures and treatments according to the specific needs of each patient.
