The five most common infections among travellers and how to prevent them
14/07/2026
International health-related infections include imported, emerging and neglected diseases that affect vulnerable populations, migrants and travellers alike. These conditions are often underdiagnosed in non-endemic settings and can have serious consequences if they are not detected and treated promptly. In addition, factors such as climate change, global mobility and the spread of vectors, such as mosquitoes, are increasing the risk of introducing and transmitting new infections across Europe.
In the coming years, increased international mobility and environmental changes will favour the emergence and spread of imported and emerging infectious diseases in non-endemic countries.
As a result, we face several key challenges:
- Ensuring the early detection of infections that are often underdiagnosed in at-risk populations.
- Strengthening epidemiological surveillance systems and outbreak response capacity.
- Developing prevention and control strategies adapted to a globalised world.
