Will you be going to the swimming pool this summer? Five tips to avoid infections

With the arrival of the heat, swimming pools become one of the most frequented and essential spaces. Cooling off is a good way to cope with high temperatures, but it also involves exposure to microorganisms that can cause infections if certain precautions are not taken.
From the Fight Against Infections Foundation, we remind you that small actions can make a big difference in protecting our health. These are five basic tips to enjoy the swimming pool safely:
The pre-swim shower is not only a matter of hygiene, but also of public health. Chlorine helps disinfect the water, but it does not eliminate all microorganisms. Showering beforehand reduces the number of germs we carry on our bodies, and doing so afterwards helps remove any infectious agents that may remain on the skin.
If you have a wound, even if it seems small, it is best not to go into the pool. Some bacteria can take advantage of these entry points to cause infections. Unlike in pools, the risk at sea is different, as salinity makes it harder for many microorganisms to survive.
Staying in a wet swimsuit for a long time creates an ideal environment for fungal growth, especially in women. To prevent infections such as mycoses, it is recommended to change promptly and dry the skin thoroughly, especially in more sensitive areas.
Shared wet areas, such as showers or the surroundings of the pool, are places where different microorganisms—especially fungi—proliferate. Walking barefoot can lead to problems such as athlete’s foot or warts. Therefore, a simple action like wearing flip-flops can prevent many infections.
Even if the water is treated, it may contain viruses or bacteria that resist chlorine. Swallowing it can cause gastrointestinal infections, with symptoms such as diarrhoea or abdominal discomfort. Avoiding ingestion of water is key, especially for children.Enjoying the swimming pool and protecting your health are compatible. Adopting these simple habits will help you reduce the risk of infections and contribute to keeping spaces safer for everyone.
